This painting was commissioned by publishers Gibbings & Company to be included in their 1895 edition of Don Quixote by Cervantes, Translated by Thomas Shelton (4 volumes).
Passed down to the son/daughter of William Gibbings the above publisher (see image of verso below).
Apparently unsigned, it is quite possible there is an initial hidden below the lip of frame.
Original housing and glazing untouched since framing in the later 19th century.
Fine piece of painting.
